
For the month of February 2010, Microsoft Xbox 360 claimed the top spot in the field of sales figures for the gaming consoles, edging out its stark competitor, Nintendo Wii. As per the analyst group, NPD, the Xbox 360 managed to gain the top spot after struggling to catch up with the Wii for the last two years. Even with the success achieved by the Xbox 360, the gaming industry as a whole showed a pretty unexpected performance and the total sales figures for the month of February, was down by 15 percent.
The sales recorded for the month of February, that includes the software, hardware and peripherals, amounted to $1.26 billion, wherein the gaming consoles registered a decrease in sales by 20 percent, amounting to $426 million. Microsoft Xbox 360 registered sales of 422,000, where as Nintendo Wii was only able to sell 397,900 units for the month of February. Sony PlayStation 3 registered a 30% increase in the sales of the consoles, as against the same time in the year 2009, and the ended the month of February 2010 with 360,100 units. The portable gaming device on the other hand were ruled by Nintendo, with a sale of 613,200 units of its immensely popular Nintendo DS, while Sony PlayStation Portable had to contend with just 133,400 units sold.
For the month of February, the highly popular gaming title, Bioshock 2, retained the top spot with a sales figure of 750,000 copies sold across all gaming platforms. Bioshock 2 Xbox version gained the highest amount of sales with 562,900 unit, thereby keeping Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros in the second place with 555,600 units.
