brains electrical signals Mind Over Matter: brain dictates body to slow down at 40

Life begins at 40 – to slow down! If you think it’s only arthritis, think again. I mean, use your brain – because it’s all in the brain. Your body is wired from the brain central command. So, if you can’t get up on one quick spring in early cheery spring, your brain may be starting to have a few loose springs, so to speak. A new research suggests that middle-aged people, though found to be healthy, begin to lose what scientists call ‘insulation in a motor-control part of the brain.’ This is called myelin.

The difference in speedy action and reflex lies in the health of myelin which, in turn, sharpens electrical signals that the brain uses to command the body. Now, you understand why Mike Tyson was all too quick with his punches (no pun intended, whatsoever). But Mike Tyson has hit the 40-year mark and this maybe a reason why he has slowed down (among other reasons, of course). This doesn’t mean that all of the brain is affected (you are invited to evaluate the Tyson case with this point).

This new research will certainly help in the study of Alzheimer’s disease. Memory has something to do with electrical charges in the brain. Myelin, definitely, has a lot to do with the aging process. With multiple sclerosis, however, myelin doesn’t gradually degrade but disappears. Nonetheless, if stress can hurt myelin, having an active lifestyle, lowering blood pressure, reducing cholesterol, treating diabetes, and having an overall cardiovascular health can repair myelin. If one looks at the logic closely, these are also the ways to slow down the aging process.
