More Than 21,000 Complaints against Daily Mail’s Column on Untimely Death of Stephen Gately

Daily Mail’s controversial homophobic column by Jan Moir after death of Stephen Gately has met with severe criticism and public outrage. More than 21,000 complaints have been filed about the piece with Press Complaints Commission. This is more than sum total of all the complaints PCC has ever received in last five years. PCC cannot ignore the matter anymore.

Jan Moir has denied the charge of being homophobic but she definitely invited trouble by stirring up a storm literally in a tea cup. It is really strange that she still seems to be unconvinced about the natural cause of sad death of young singer. Is she disappointed that no spicy secrets tumbled out of the holiday tragedy? It is also clear that she is more interested to focus on his being gay and his lifestyle than in his creative talent and his courageous decision to come out of the closet when he was at the peak of success.

Slamming celebrities and their lifestyle is easy but no one takes into account amount of pressure, stress and much press generated controversies they have to face when they are in limelight. It is indeed shocking that a columnist of her stature should be naïve about the fact that Stephen Gately is not the only one who died young there are many other singers like Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson etc who died early and suddenly. Unfortunately media still continues rake controversies to stalk them and their families even after their tragic deaths.

The only silver lining is that large number of people are coming out and slamming such insensitive homophobic articles. Media houses should realize that they are being blatantly immoral and perverted by indulging in such cheap publicity stunts surrounding someone’s personal lifestyle, sexual preference and even tragic death.
