Motorola has got its act together to fight Apple’s iPad and get a share of the growing tablet market. They have worked hard on the product development front and created the Xoom. The Motorola Xoom has dual core processors, Nividia graphics, HD camcorder, 1GB Ram, front camera and 3G features that are upgradeable to 4G. They seem to be very confident about their product as they have priced it at $800.
There is an additional financial implication as to activate WiFi functionality on this device, a minimum of one month data subscription is required. You must activate a data subscription with Verizon or the Xoom’s WiFi will remain locked down. Some experts feel this strategy will harm the product and will be perceived as a negative by the consumers. Marketing experts feel that the pricing strategy is not suited for a new product that is in direct competition with a well established product from a very strong brand.
It is true that the top end iPad model was priced at $830 but at the same time there were cheaper options available down to $500 which is not the case with Motorola Xoom. The perception that is building up ia that the iPad cost as much as a notebook; the Xoom costs as much as a laptop. It will be interesting to see the next iPad model two months down the line. Apple is known to add on features while maintaining the price point. Let’s see what Motorola does to shore up the Xoom’s sales figures.
