The world’s largest Muslim online community is a virtual world of friends. It’s a social networking site for the followers of Islam. Considering that Islam has been construed as the opposite of friendly, no thanks to media portrayal of its adherents as terrorist and religiously fundamentalist, Muxlim.com may just do wonders for Muslim PR. The site currently registers upwards of 1.5 million visitors each month. Those who drop by come from some 190 different countries. And the site isn’t even 2 years old yet.
The site is primarily geared to bring Muslim people across the globe together. This may not be too difficult to achieve, since Muslims have displayed the quality of sticking it out with one another in the end, no matter if there’s a basic bone of contention between Sunni and Shi’a. However, this virtual world does not discriminate against other people of other faiths. So long as there’s no offensive material, then the site accepts friends from all and sundry to use the site. This isn’t asking too much. Banning offensive material is a cardinal rule in online dealings, anyway. All the better for this site that espouses inter-faith cooperation and existence.
Muxlim.com, like other social networking sites, has discussion and picture-sharing forums. It has, however, a news feature and listening tools on the teachings of the Qur’an. By and large, the Muslims who set up the site did not pass the opportunity to spread the Islam faith. This may augur well for the followers of the religion. I’m not sure how this will settle with those who are not.
