When it comes to getting just what you want, the best way, perhaps, is to get right down to the basics. Women in Naples, Italy, have taken over complete control of their men by denying them all carnal pleasures in an attempt to convince them to give up on fireworks.

The campaign was started by Carolina Staiano who claims that the dangerous fireworks on New Year’s give Naples a Gaza-like look. The campaign which started almost as a joke with only 20 women has escalated to a group of hundreds in the past month with women signing up every day. Staiano has a very personal reason for being against the fireworks. Her husband and father of two is paralysed waist down and suffers epileptic fits ever since an injury he suffered when someone set off a firework near his legs. A ward doctor, Vincenzo Sorrentino claims the sex strike is inspired by the women of ancient Athens who refused sex with their men until they laid down their weapons and made peace with Sparta.

Interestingly, the campaign is being supported not only be hospitals and the local parish, but even the Naples authorities who are sending residents sms’s with the campaign slogan, “Make love, not explosions”!
