Australia declared a day of mourning for its brave citizens who died battling worst bushfires which swept across the state of Victoria on 7th February. More than 200 people have lost their lives in these bushfires which still continues to rage in some parts. Some bodies are still being discovered.
Investigations in to the possible cause of the fires which turned into national calamity are still on. There has been suspicion that deliberate arson could be one of the causes and a man has already been charged. Australian PM praised citizens for showing exemplary courage, compassion and resilience during crisis in the national mourning service that was attended by international dignitaries.
Citizens though are asking uncomfortable questions about lack of warning about bushfires as it spread rapidly and didn’t give much time to escape. The blazes have rendered many people homeless and caused much damage to life and property. The promise of rebuilding is heartening but loss of human life can never be compensated. Of course the response of Australian government in the face of nation’s worst disaster and its commitment to rebuild, investigate and compensate is praiseworthy.
