New Mexico Prostitute Murders

After more than 50,000 cubic meters of sand were removed from an 18-foot-deep pit, a shocking story was uncovered. In the West Mesa pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the bodies of 12 young Hispanic women were dug.

It is the biggest crime story in America of late. Hundreds of bones belonging to 12 women were unearthed. One of the women was pregnant as evidenced by fetus bones. These women had earlier been reported as missing. 7 of the bodies have been identified: Monica Candelaria, 21 years old; Veronica Romero, 26; Cinnamon Elks, 31; Julie Neto, 23; Victoria Chavez, 28; Doreen Marquez, 27; and Michelle Valdez, 22 years old and was four months pregnant.

All of them disappeared between 2001 and 2006. All were Hispanic and lived in one of the worst suburbs of Albuquerque, an area marked by prostitution, drugs and violence.

Police theorize that ‘the same person or persons’ have been responsible for these deaths. West Mesa has the reputation of being a dumping ground for slain gang members, pimps, and drug dealers. There, too, is the regular occurrence in West Mesa of prostitutes being used as drug mules who are eventually murdered to silence them from reporting to the police or testifying in court against drug traffickers and smugglers.Murders of women have been recurring in New Mexico. In the 1990s, murdered women were found in the capital of Santa Fe. In the 1970s, the murders of ‘young Hispanic women in northern New Mexico were tied to a drug ring that received police protection.’
