Japan is world leader in innovations and it is known that vending machines in Japan do talk and instruct. Japanese brand Dydo developed talking vending machines way back in 2000 and has been trying to innovate the speech part. It has been developing local versions for different regions over time. The latest new version in Okinawa talks in regional dialect and uses typical local style of expression and words. This is interesting way of marketing while retaining local essence in the times of globalisation.
Some special local versions of Dydo’s vending machines were made for Kansai region and these machines sounded more friendlier and casual. Similar attempts were made for Aomori and Nagoya regions as well. Now the friendly banter may actually become more informal and interesting. Apparently the official Japanese language is tad too boring so may be this attempt of attracting people by using vending machines that speak in dialects will really pay-off. This is amusing and entertaining way of advertising to attract locals.
Hope poor nations and developing nations take a lesson or two from this and employ regional salespersons who speak in dialects. But will man get the kind of attention these vending machines get?
