Besides the free online file storage and song store, users of the next version of Ubuntu (10.04, after the next version of Ubuntu – 9.10 Karmic Koala -, has the code name Lucid Lynx) may have another resource to integrate computers with the cloud: the synchronization of address books on the desktop and a smartphone via an online service.
Everything seems very simple: just install a plug-in “in the email client on the desktop (many are supported, including Thunderbird, Mail and Outlook), an application on the smartphone and the rest is automatic. The service, dubbed PhoneSync was developed in partnership with a company called Funambol and will be available only to paying users of Ubuntu One The only plan currently available for U.S. $ 10 monthly, wich will entitle anyone to 50 GB of online storage .
Currently the service is at version “public alpha” and there are applications for Android and iPhones smartphones. An FAQ with information about the service and a page with basic instructions for installing the plug-ins and applications are available.
Ubuntu 10:04 “Lucid Lynx” is scheduled for release on April 24.
