An upcoming film entitled ‘2012’ feeds on the current paranoia of some people that the world will end on December 2012 as predicted by the Mayan calendar, that a rogue planet called Nibiru will collide with Earth, and that solar flare will consume the planet in flames. These are all highly-imaginative fiction, of course. NASA refutes the notion. Even modern-day Mayan descendants, themselves, have stated that the 2012 end of the world idea is false.
“I don’t have anything against the movie. It’s the way it’s been marketed and the way it exploits people’s fears,” says NASA scientist David Morrison at the Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. He has launched a counter-attack through an online column.
The movie ‘2012,’ with John Cusack playing the lead character, has employed various marketing strategies to hype up its promotion through feeding alarmist propaganda into people’s fears and collective paranoia. ‘Sony Pictures is behind a particularly viral campaign to build publicity for its upcoming apocalyptic movie which debuts on November 13.’
Morrison believes that the film’s producer, Sony, ‘has crossed a line with promoting “2012”.’ He adds, “I think people are really, really worried about the world coming to an end. Kids are contemplating suicide. Adults tell me they can’t sleep and can’t stop crying. There are people who are really, really scared. People are very gullible. It is a sad testimonial that you need NASA to tell you the world’s not going to end.”

Planets are highly disciplined objects going round or in a fixed path round a Star like Sun. They do not go beyond their chosen or automatic paths. There is no System like Solar System anywhere near our Solar System. Like an object cannot escape the gravity of earth, no planet can escape the gravity or such force from its own Star or Sun. It is only meteors or comets which have found their place either at the end of the Solar System or in between the planets which have also known movements and every scientist knows where they are so placed and their movements. They are far far smaller than even the smallest planet of our Solar System. Millions and millions of objects like comets are present at the end of the Solar System. They act as a cover to our Solar System. No foreign object will be allowed to enter the Solar System so easily. No object can move even at the speed of sound let alone remotely suggesting that an object will come faster than light. Even for arguments sake, let us imagine that some foreign object may come and hit the earth. If it is really a rogue as is being widely described, how can anyone even imagine, it will chose only the earth to be hit. A rogue is a rogue. It may go berserk while crossing so many highly gravitational objects like Jupiter, Saturn, etc. When it is called a rogue planet, why it should choose only our Solar System to enter. There are billions and billions of Systems like our Solar System in our own Milky Way Galaxy. Each System is so widely separated and the gap between two such Systems are itself several light years. Man on the earth is still to know exactly the size, number of planets, their gravitational forces, etc. of any other System nearby. A nearest Star to our Solar System is several light years away and it is sheer absurd to even imagine that such and such an unknown ‘rogue’ planet will come and hit the earth. There must be a limit to fiction and it should not go beyond certain limits so as to threaten the whole of innocent believers in such horrible catastrophe.
