A report released this Thursday by the International Crisis Group (ICG), a prestigious non-governmental organization, says that North Korea has several tons of chemical weapons that can be put on missiles capable of making a rapid attack on South Korea.
The report of the NGO says that the consensus view is that the North Korean Army has approximately between 2,500 and 5,000 tonnes of chemical weapons, including mustard gas and sarin and other deadly agents that affect the nervous system.
North Korea has developed chemical weapons for decades and can throw them for long-range artillery in the area of Seoul, where about half the 49 million South Koreans lives, being vulnerable to North Korean missiles that could reach across the country.
The document also says that North Korea also maintains a program of biological weapons, but ICG does not think the country has fully developed this program.
In another report, released separately, the ICG says North Korea has moved more than 600 Scud-type missiles that can reach South Korea and Rodong about 320 missiles, capable of reaching Japan.
In recent weeks North Korea raised the tension in northern Asia, the region responsible for one sixth of the world economy, with the launch of missiles, threats to South Korea and a nuclear test on May 25. Such actions led the UN to impose sanctions to the country.
