According to a US assessment, the US knows exactly where Pakistan’s nuclear weapons are located. Chaklala is the home base of Pakistan’s Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence, known as the ISI. Within the walls of Chaklala is found the small compound of Strategic Plans. This is where Pakistan’s nuclear keys are kept. But if the US and the rest of the world are paranoid about Pak nuke arsenal, Pakistan itself is protecting the nuclear cache from what it deems are the wrong hands that these weapons can fall in such as radical Islamists, India, and US – all ready to pounce upon sight of the controversial items.
For some reason, the US thinks that Pakistan harbors weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), and that Pakistan would be the most current hotbed of terrorism. Is this the probable reason why Pakistan has really been getting kid glove treatment? Or is it because the instability of Pakistan’s political structure makes it all the more precarious if, indeed, it keeps nuclear weapons. Nobody has really seen these alleged WMDs if, again, they are, indeed, WMDs.
Unfortunately, the rest of the world loses sleep when the most powerful nations go paranoid. The US has been having foraging missions in Pakistan due not so much for eliminating al-Qaeda as assuring itself that Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal is safe and secure. The Bush administration bequeaths the Obama administration with a report that Pak nuke safekeeping is far from ‘foolproof.’ Obama’s worst Pakistan nightmare is really not so much Pakistan’s potential terror-wielding via WMDs as it is Bush’s paranoia that distorted global political balance in the past 8 years.
