On his way to collect Nobel Peace Prize on 10th Dec President Obama is likely to make a quick stopover in Copenhagen on 9th Dec to attend international climate change meeting. Not only would he be attending a meeting, he is expected to announce reduction of greenhouse gases by US in the coming years. Of course this will be provisional target of US since climate bill has not yet been passed and ratified by its own senate.
It is intriguing that when climate change is on everybody’s mind and cards America is yet to table the bill and it is unlikely to be passed either because of the skeptics. Obama may have a different game plan of committing and announcing the reductions at the climate change summit and then get it passed by the senate. According to the White House officials he may announce whopping 83 percent cut from 2005 levels by the year 2050.
Obama is known for oratory skills and will certainly get a lot of applaud for the announcement. But getting down to implementing it will be very difficult given the political resistance to the bill and America’s consumer centric economy and lifestyle. But as a leading nation of the world it is high time America took constructive initiatives and lead from the front to save future of the planet.
