Barack Obama stepped up pressure on the leaders of Pakistan and Afghanistan to adopt a more aggressive role in the battle against the Taliban who have made advances in both countries over the last few months. Both Karzai and Zardari agree to fight al-Qaeda, along with the US.
Obama was satisfied with the outcome of recently held meetings both in individual and trilateral talks with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari. Obama said at a press conference, flanked by the two presidents, that it had been ‘extraordinarily productive’ and that the two leaders ‘appreciate fully the seriousness of the threats’ and have ‘reaffirmed their commitment to address them.’
The US president promised that his country will maintain a lasting commitment to the two Asian nations which are under the threat of falling under Taliban control. To overcome the challenge and for purposes of having shared peace in the future, instead of a common enemy, Obama considers it crucial for both countries to cooperate further towards more than what has been done so far.
While relations between the US government and the countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan have not been free of tension in the last few months, Obama clearly gave boost to the two leaders.
