The month of October this year has proved to be a very bad one for the U.S forces currently deployed in Afghanistan. Since the beginning of the war on terror in the year 2001, this month has been by the deadliest of all. Today, eight American soldiers died in separate bomb attacks, concentrated in the Southern Afghanistan region.
As per the military statements, seven other American soldiers were killed in an insurgent ambush, while they were carrying out a routine patrol in their armored convoys. These latest additions to the mounting U.S causalities list has been described as a result of complex and highly coordinated terror strikes. The other troops who have sustained injuries have been rushed to the medical rooms for treatment.
Both the attacks, have reportedly taken place in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan, a place where violence has been under control for some time now and reconstruction efforts were taking place. Soon after the first bomb was detonated, the military patrol convoy was attacked, leading to a prolonged and intensive fire fight, resulting in the deaths of seven American troops.
The causality toll for the month of October stands at 55 soldiers dead, surpassing the previous high estimate of 51 killed soldiers for the month of August. The only other number that overshadows these statistics, is the 137 soldiers that were killed in November, 2004, during the liberation of Fallujah in Iraq.
In a statement, Navy Capt. Jane Campbell (Military spokeswoman) said,
“A loss like this is extremely difficult for the families as well as for those who served alongside these brave service members. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends who mourn their loss.”
