Of Vodka, Film and Robots in Love

Fresh from Where the Wild Things Are, director Spike Jonze has just announced his latest of projects, I’m Here, which premiers Friday, January 22, at the Sundance Film Festival.

I’m Here is actually a love story about a boy and girl who are, hold your breath, robots made from cast-off computer parts from1994. The story is set in LA. Jonze creates a quirky, alternate world for their romance. In one scene, for instance, the boy plugs in the girl for the night which becomes an intimate scene, making you fidget in your seat. In no way can your mind flash back to that innocent little boy of Artificial Intelligence. This one is a love story.

spike2 Of Vodka, Film and Robots in LoveFigliulio and Bijarchi, the producers, had given Jonze a brief to write and direct a film showing creativity conquering conformity. Going by the fact that the film has begun to travel to film festivals, one could gauge the reception.

The budget for the film was meant for a 30-minute one. Still, it has been accepted to the Sundance, Berlin, and Turkey film festivals. Soon it may get aired on a cable channel. The film is interestingly also of commercial advertising value to Absolut, the Swedish Vodka brand. What remains to be seen is if a peculiar project such as I’m Here, will boil down to brand recognition for Absolut, and how film viewers may accept such a commercial-creative blend. But then, Jonze is known for treating his ads like art.
