James Dyson Award, the designing competition, always has some interesting designs to offer. Most of the entries are quite creative and simplistic, often making one wonder why it hadn’t been thought of before. The entries are eventually judged by a highly esteemed panel of judges and by viewers and some of them often make it into the real world.
Orbis is an entry for a portable urban vehicle from Canada. This mono-wheeled human transporter has been designed with the Segway in mind and looks much like the Segway with one wheel. Orbis turns out to be better than the Segway, though, because the self-balancing vehicle is also portable eliminating the need to search for parking spaces at all. Orbis was conceptualised as an alternative to cars and is also quite eco-friendly since the vehicle is powered by a li-ion battery.
The chassis of the vehicle has been designed around the solo wheel and the whole thing weighs at just 25lbs. It can hit a top speed of 22kmph which means the Orbis would be quite a buy if it was a real product.
