It’s that time of the year when everything about exuberance spells Oscar. And everthing about Oscar or other awards signifies designer gowns, clutches, hairdos, sandals…blazers and ties. This year though, it’s about toning down everything extravagant.

True actors and actresses will dress at their best on Sunday, the D-Day for one of the most prestigious cinematic galas of the year – the Academy awards. But no sporting of diamond studded footwear. All things Oscar are being given that delicate balance, between the need to celebrate and party, and the need to restrain in the event of an economy in recession.

Although efforts are being made in plenty to bring down the spending, there are designers swearing by the need for glamour. All the same, excessive dressing up is out. Simplistic elegance is in. Appropriate dressing up seems to be the buzzword. Diamonds are out, coloured stones are in. Or for that matter a touch of gold.

Price tags are not being flaunted, although the spotlight is on style. With pink slips being the in-thing in United States of America, celebrity dressing up is getting a review. For, its millions that exchange hands between film stars, fashionistas and designers. As a Hollywood seen-it-all teller speaks out though, glamour on the red carpet lasts just as long as it happens. Jewellery, dresses, accessories – they all go back where they belong. So it is a case of lending out and getting back for designers.
