Pakistan military is finally showing its commitment to fight militancy. Pushed by US and advancing Taliban, Pakistan security forces have finally launched attacks in Mingora, the main town in Swat. More than 64 Taliban militants have been killed in the encounter.

Swat Valley had been taken over by Taliban for quite sometime but once peace talks between government of Pakistan and militants to end violence in Swat failed the equations between government and Taliban changed. Moreover Taliban has been steadily advancing towards Islamabad. This created an International pressure since there were growing fears of Taliban gaining more control over nuclear-armed Pakistan. Pakistan government and military had to act.

Thousands of civilians have fled from Swat and surrounding regions and are seeking refuge in camps. More than 38,000 people have been displaced from the region ever since fighting erupted. It is feared that if violence escalates more than 800,000 people will have to flee the valley. Government will have to arrange aid and shelter for all these refugees. Thus there will be additional pressure on already dwindling economy.

Government of Pakistan have nurtured these militant groups over the years for their own agenda but this is probably the first time they are turning around and trying to stamp out militant groups which have already become a Frankenstein.
