Palm, Inc.’s success with their smartphones need not be questioned at a time when they are one of the leading sellers in the market. Since Palm’s announcement earlier this year about the development of a new operating system as a replacement for the Palm OS Garnet, fans of the manufacturer has been eagerly awaiting the release of the new operating system.
The webOS for the latest Palm phones has been titled Ares and the new IDE (integrated development environment) has been built with standard Web technology. The new operating system runs on the browser and includes a visual form layout designer, step debugger, and interactive code editor. The syntax highlighting on the editor is based on the free Mozilla application Bespin. Ares runs on most of the browsers available today (Firefox, Chrome, etc).
Ares operating system has a number of interesting features, although there has been criticism from testers about the easy usability of some of the tools. Whether these are problems that would continue or get better as the user gets adapted to the OS is yet to be determined.
