Water crisis is a very common problem in Africa. Playpump International, a non-profit organization in Africa dedicated to uplift the living conditions of the people have installed an innovative windmill called “Playpump” in schools in South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland and Zambia.

The Playpump has its own interesting story. It is installed in a playground that serves as a merry-go-round and, uses the boundless energy of children to pump water out of the ground. It can pump up to 1,400 liters of water per hour at 16rpm from a depth of 40meters. It has the capacity of going to the depth of 100 meters. The organization’s goal is to provide the benefits of pure drinking water to around ten million people by 2010. If this concept interests you or inspires you may come forward and do your bit by donating to the organization.

This innovative idea indeed seems very appealing but to me, the motive of the organization doesn’t sound very healthy. Using the innocent children in their schools during play time to draw water is perhaps an act of cruelty. It is an exploitation of the children’s rights. In the name of providing access to clean drinking water, the organization has ruthlessly targeted children thereby, extracting the needed human labor from them to pump water. I am sure there are better ways to deal with this problem without exploiting the innocent children. This is an act of hypocrisy. The children are given the freedom to play happily and, yet their freedom is still chained. They are oblivious to the very fact that they are being used and exploited.

What an absurd rant about abusing children. The kids are playing. Where’s the problem. They aren’t being forced. It looks like a common toy found in playgrounds when I was a child. We loved them. Couldn’t get enough of them. Get of your ridiculous high horse. Focus your attention on real abuse, not a great idea that is harmless to all involved.
