A synod has been organized at the Vatican and is devoted to discuss the problems in Africa. Approximately 200 bishops from 53 African states have come together to discuss the civil wars and injustices in their continent.

St Peter’s Basilica was filled with the musical African choirs. Prayers were said in various languages like Portuguese, Amharic, Arabic and Swahili. Pope Benedict formally opened the synod. Calling the African continent as the “spiritual lung” praised its rich culture and spirituality. However, he spoke of the increasing violence and intolerance preached by the religious fundamentalist in the continent.

The rate at which the Catholic Church is growing in Africa is tremendous and faster in comparison to other parts of the world. In a span of 30 years, there are almost 150 million catholic followers in Africa. Apart from the bishops, experts like the former head of the joint UN African Union (Darfur) are also invited to address the synod.
