So long as the society is ruled and dictated by terms of the religious minded, we shall continue to hear such remarks. In fact evangelists (the Catholic Church is very proud of it's evangelical history) use and abuse people's popular sentiments to promote Christianity. Pope did just that. When the woman was raped by men, it was an indication that it was a punishment given to a 'gay woman' and thus reflects the popular sentiments towards homosexuality. Pope knows what needs to be done to please the popular sentiments and thus spoke he. Good businessman he is. Or perhaps too senile.
