
The Sudanese government and the United Nations together had formed a group comprising of both the parties to assess the needs among the people in March 11 to 19. The needs in war-torn Darfur have been assessed and the results are not all that rosy. The United Nations humanitarian officials said that banning the aid groups can only trigger more poverty.
There has been a serious gap in the food aid, health and nutrition, shelter, hygiene and sanitation and other necessities on which 4.7 million residents of Dafur are dependent. With the expulsion of 12 NGOs by the Sudanese government, which was the the immediate aftermath of the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) issuance of arrest warrant for President Omar-al-Bashir. The Sudanese government defended itself by accusing the NGOs providing “fabricated information” to the ICC.
Long term solution are being planned to bridge these gaps. The NGO’s have to improve on their technical management and in other areas of coordination and administration. Within few weeks the funds and other resources will be depleted. The sanitary facility need to be maintained. Almost 650,000 people do not have access to the basic heath care. Shelter need to be provided to millions of people before the rain starts. The pressure has been mounting on the Sudanese government to withdraw the expulsion decision of the NGOs, which it labeled it as “band aid solution”.
