iran post election violence Prisoner Abuse In Detention Centers Sparks Outrage Across Iran

After Iranian authorities shut down Kahrizak detention center, that was created as a makeshift prison for the detainees of the Iranian post election violence. However, even with the intervention of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to close down the facility, there has been an incredible unrest and outrage amid the citizens Iran, ever since the reports of gross human rights violation and torture started to pour in.

Those detainees who are now with their families have reported that, many of the other prisoners in the detention centers were beaten to death, or in other cases, were forced to clean dirty toilet bowls by licking them. Such accounts of horrendous torture have sparked fresh protests and many believe that these initial protests are a powder keg, just waiting to explode. The Iranian authorities have so far returned some bodies of the detainees held in these centers to their families, but the families have reported that the bodies are covered with burns all over. According to hospital officials, more than 100 detainees held in such camps have died.

However, the growing unrest in the public hasn’t gone unnoticed in the eyes of the government, as President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, urged the head of the judiciary to show ‘Islamic mercy‘ to those detained and release the prisoners. The authorities also released 140 prisoners from one of the detention facilities. According to Ali Mottahari (Conservative Parliament member),

“Why did things have to go so far as to require the personal intervention of the supreme leader? If we are satisfied just to close one detention center, these people will continue to do what they have done elsewhere and nothing will change.”
