Proterra’s HFC35: Bringing Hybrid Technology to Public Transportation

Hybrid engines are taking over the auto world in a hurry and while ideally one would like to see complete emission-free engines hit the road, one can safely agree that they have a long way to go before becoming completely commercial. So hybrid engines are the next best green option we have and they are now being introduced into public transportation system in a system that will see them grow in phases. Proterra has released a new hybrid bus design that sports a hybrid engine with very impressive performance.

The HFC35, is composite bodied hybrid-electric bus that made its debut at the American Public Transportation Association expo in San Diego. It can seat up to 37 people currently and is propelled by a system that is apparently 90% efficient. What we do not know though is how good the engine is in terms of reducing carbon emissions to what extent it can really reduce pollution. The battery is good enough for 100,000 charge cycles and that is again very good for a public transportation vehicle.
