Coming as a rude shock to the lovers of pure colourless or white diamonds and those appreciative of the beauty of a pink one, a rare blue diamond will be auctioned off by Petra Diamonds soon.

The 7.03 ct blue-hued diamond was part of a 26.6ct stone mined from the Cullinan mine in South Africa by Petra. With the fall in diamond demand and prices, Petra had begun the polishing and marketing of the diamonds themselves. This little beauty would definitely win them quite some dough; it is estimated that the diamond would be sold for between $5.8m and $8.5. Being offered for sale at Sotheby’s, the blue diamond has been given the highest grade from the Gemological Institute of America as having internally flawless clarity.

The blue diamond will be part of the Magnificent Jewels Sale at the auction and the lucky person who becomes the new owner would also be the one to name it. Watch out for the auction on May 12th at the Beau-Rivage Hotel, Geneva.
