The best and most expensive treasures often not just locked away from curios and prying eyes but hidden so very carefully that they may be forgotten even by the owner.
When Dr. Harold Carr’s relatives opened the garage of his house after his death, they found that he had left them more than a rumbling house as an inheritance. The garage turned out to hold Carr’s most expensive possession, a 1973 Bugatti Type 57S Atlante. The car originally belonged to the fifth Earl Howe of England who had it custom made. Covered in a heap of dust making it almost unrecognisable, the car had been sitting in the garage since 1960, five years since Carr bought for £895. As one of only 17 ever built, the Bugatti is to be auctioned by Bonhams at Paris today starting at £3 million but is believed to bring in double.
Carr’s relatives knew of his old cars but only a few were aware that Carr owned an Atlante and had kept it secret. Other vehicles found at the residence were an Aston Martin and E-Type Jag.
