[re]Drive: An Eco-Friendly External Hard Drive from SimpleTech

SimpleTech, the data storage brand of Hitachi has come up with the [re]Drive. It is a 500GB external hard drive, which is packaged in recyclable aluminum, and “renewable, naturally grown bamboo.” Looks like SimpleTech is becoming eco0friendly and is following the example of tree-hugging techie market. One very good advantage of this [re]Drive is that it lessens or negates the need for an internal fan as the aluminum and bamboo enclosure acts as a heat sink.

Another feature that stands out for this crazy [re]Drive is its packaging, which is either made of recycled or recyclable material. Interestingly, materials are kept separate from one another so that the drive can be easily disassembled for its recycling purposes. Sounds pretty cool but this would also mean cutting more number of bamboo trees.

Indeed, it will be good if SimpleTech grows their own bamboos for this purpose. If you are interested in the drive, you can buy it from Amazon for just $84 (USD). I guess it’s worth spending on a cool environment-friendly electronic item such as the [re]Drive. This sounds quite interesting to me and I am going to lay my hands on it.
