Most people are reluctant to read. The downside of this is poor knowledge. People generally do not have the interest to read because they feel discouraged by their inability to comprehend what they read. Reading comprehension skills can whet the appetite for reading because they encourage the person to learn more and more, since he already gradually understands the topic. This encouragement paves the way for a general interest in the activity of reading. Interest in reading makes a person more informed and generally smarter because sources of knowledge can be found mostly in reading materials.

Many people are discouraged to read because they cannot seem to grasp the interconnection of reading topics. They fail to understand that items of reading content are just either cause or effect of each other and/or further explanations of basic themes and messages. The ability to piece together bits of information brings about a wealth of richer knowledge and understanding, thereby making a person an authority on a particular topic. In this day and age of information overdrive, reading comprehension skills bring about the ability to connect pieces of information. Food labels in grocery items, for example, are really all connected to health matters. The purpose of reading is to connect the ideas on the page to what a person already knows. The result is greater and wider knowledge.

Improved knowledge about topics affords a person the capacity for analytical thinking. It is only through imbibing information, then processing it into knowledge, can a person be able to analyze for himself the situations presented. Analytical thinking is very much needed before making judgments and decisions. Without analytical thinking, a person can easily be fooled with information that may be false. Misinformation or fraudulent information victimizes the person who does not understand what he reads, and therefore cannot judge for himself if the information is true or false. Reading comprehension skills ultimately give a person the chance to make informed decisions based on logical analysis of information.

Tons of information these days will only go to waste if people cannot assimilate them for useful purposes. If only people would have reading comprehension skills, information would be beneficial to them. Having the skill brings interest in reading, the ability to understand how pieces of information fit together, and the capability for analytical thinking. To be able to comprehend information correctly will bring about wider and deeper knowledge, as well as endow a person with the capacity to make informed decisions. Reading comprehension skills bring great advantages. Overall, this skill is a must for people to hone.
