The North American Jammie Thomas was ordered to pay $ 1.92 million to six label records in illegal downloading of their works, protected by copyright. In unprecedented decision, the courts of the State of Minnesota has determined that it pay $ 80 grand for each of 24 songs downloaded by the network.

Single mother of two children, Thomas, 32, was accused of “violating voluntarily” the copyright to download songs. Among the songs downloaded by the Internet – the total would be 1702, but the process is limited to 24 files – songs of the groups were Destiny’s Child, Green Day and Guns N ‘Roses. The companies Warner Brothers. Records, Sony BMG, Arista Records LLC, Interscope Records, UMG Recordings and Capitol Records will receive the money.

In 2007, Thomas had to pay $ 222 thousand for download and distribute their songs.

Explaining the process from downloads through Kazaa, the jury decided that the reproduction on the distribution of copyrighted material constitutes infringement of the law.

So far, the RIAA has managed to sue 30 thousand individuals cases against accused them of sharing songs through the network, but this is the first time that a dispute that a dispute was brought to court.
