
One of the biggest and most popular social networking applications creator, RockYou has announced that, it has raised $50 million in venture capital. RockYou is known to be the most successful applications developer for the social networking behemoth, Facebook.
The new venture funding acquired by RockYou has been provided by Softbank and this latest acquisition has brought the total amount of funds in venture capital to $119 million, that includes investments from Sequoia Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Partech International and DCM. The venture capital firms nowadays seem to be very confident in investing in companies that work alongside the social networks, such as Facebook, as the social networks have proven to be extremely lucrative ventures in last couple of years.
RockYou’s corporate profile isn’t only limited to Facebook, it is also involved neck deep in MySpace, Orkut, hi5, Friendster and Bebo and has recently entered into the world of virtual commodities and gifts for the social networking website, MySpace. RockYou is also planning an expansion and is believed to be heading to the field of game advertising. As of now, the application developer has about 1,000 running applications across ta host of social networking websites, with more 213 million users accessing these apps on a monthly basis. RockYou is known to be the third largest applications developer after Zyngya and Playfish and has recorded 40.5 million monthly active users.
According to Lisa Marino (V.P. Sales, RockYou),
“Softbank was looking for us to be a little more aggressive in our application releases, especially in the Asian market. They wanted us to fundamentally grow more quickly, and so that was the impetus for this deal.”
