It seems that while we are finding new ways to produce energy from green sources, the oceans of the world are becoming more and more testing fields for up and coming green technology. It is important that we learn to harness the vast amounts of energy that the massive oceans hide within them, but we need to do that without disrespecting nature and inviting its wrath. Searaser is one project that really does not sound all that good in the long run even though it has an ability to generate power.
Searaser is a device that is attached to the sea floor by a flexible tether which allows it to move up and down with the motion of the ocean. By using a double piston action, the Searaser can pump water both as it rises and falls on waves on to the top of a hill. When power is needed, this artificial lake is let lose onto turbines to generate hydroelectric power of a new variety. A prototype has successfully pumped water up a 160 foot hill though a pipe, but a full sized Searaser could potentially pump water up 650 feet.
Scientists estimate that one such unit could produce 0.25 MW of energy and a field of Searasers could potentially be profitable energy sources. Pumping ocean water uphill and then letting it lose, somehow the idea just seems a bit unnecessary. Let us keep this as the last resort for now!
