A still unidentified man, possibly of Georgian origin, shot and killed at least 13 people and wounded 18 others after opening fire on students and faculty of the Azerbaijan’s State Oil Academy in Baku, the capital of the oil-rich country. The school building was immediately surrounded by the police who promptly set up roadblocks in the area.
Several witnesses stated that the massacre happened right after a heated discussion between several students in the courtyard of the university. Soon after, one of them pulled out a gun, shot the others, entered the building, and then continued shooting. It was determined later that the killer was not a student of the university.
Sources in the agency Interfax-Azerbaijan claim that the unknown gunman committed suicide after being surrounded by the police, while a news correspondent from Trend News said that he was ‘neutralized’ by government agents. Other versions of this news story mention the massacre carried out by two killers. Reports about this incident are still hazy, awaiting further details and facts.
The Azerbaijan’s State Oil Academy is a public university founded in 1920.
