If you had been glossing over those 4 core computers for their high efficiency and speed, think once about the super computers, which have hundreds of cores in them, all arranged in a rack. Now, in an ever-growing silicon industry, the aptly named Silicon Graphics announced its concept computer, which it calls the Molecule.
The Molecule uses off the shelf but consumer electronic components and comes with an astounding 10,000 cores all jam-packed into a single rack. This however is still a concept and isn’t real. It however helps us understand how we can use chips and memory in PCs and create an awesome powerhouse. The Molecule is capable of handling 20,000 threads and consumes very little power.
However, this isn’t the only computer with so many cores. Most supercomputers come with more than 100,000 cores and these are the ones used by scientists for advanced research. However, Molecule looks like a promising concept, which is not only technologically advanced but also power saving and useful. It is only a matter of time that we shall know if it is ever going to be released.
