So This Is What Our Future Will Look Like?

The Sh?nen Sunday, a weekly magazine run in Japan since its inception in the year 1959, carried a very interesting series of artworks in its 1969 edition, titled, Computopia. The illustrated series, envisioned the future, where everything we do is done automatically by robots and computers, quite like as depicted in the animated series, The Jetsons. Computopia can be taken as an artist’s impression of what he thinks the future would be like, from the 1960′s era.

Classroom of the future:

This image portrays the classroom of the future, where instead of paper and pen, children will be interacting solely with computers. The rendition was conceived by Shigeru Komatsuzaki, titled, ‘The Rise of the Computerized School’. As per the image, the students will be solving questions and maths problems on a computer and in case the answer is incorrect, the computer will allow the students to make corrections, till they get the right answer

This second image depicts, how unmanned robots, will be used instead of class monitors to maintain discipline and order in the classroom. If any student is out of line, the robot simply taps a little hard on the student, to bring him back in order.

This image shows what the artist thought of the future homes, where everything from phones to dining tables will be automated. Here, the artist depicts the man of the house, speaking via a video phones, while an automated newspaper dispenser, gives out the morning’s paper.

Over here, the kid is watching or playing on a 3D television, while there is a space car taking off right outside the window. There also seems to be an automated vacuum cleaner robot, that is busy cleaning the floor.

Over here, the lady of the house is busy in her accounting work, on what looks like a hybrid between a calculator and a notebook.

Behind the lady of the house, the artist has depicted that, while she is engrossed in her work, there is a robotic iron taking care of the clothes, an automated dining table that not only follows the family, but also keeps the food warm and a kitchen robot, dutifully fulfilling the kitchen errands.

In this image, the artist has truly captured the hopes and aspirations that people have invested in the modern medical science. The images shows a fully automated surgical robot, performing a heart surgery, where the patient’s heart is kept on the table, while the doctor is evaluating the situation.
