Ugly Wudi - Unilever

Unilever has tied up with producers of Chinese version of ‘Ugly Betty’ to market their beauty products. ‘Ugly Betty’ – the tale of blossoming of ‘ugly duckling’ girlie into ‘beautiful swan’ lady has a universal appeal for all women who long for such magical makeovers. But will it be a good idea to sell Dove or any other beauty product as a beauty prescription for ‘Ugly Betty’?

Unilever usually doesn’t need to take such a long-winding road to sell its products. They are generous spenders for campaigns and they even rope in celebrities and beautiful faces for their ad campaigns. But it seems they are unable to make in-roads in to Chinese market. So in order to sell their beauty products to Chinese women they first had to woo Chinese producers ‘Ugly Betty’ and win all exclusive rights of the show and the script itself is about an ad agency working ‘Dove’ campaign which finally transforms ‘Ugly Betty”.

Piggy riding is becoming a norm in advertising industry. So it remains to be seen if Unilever improves market value of Chinese Soap ‘Ugly Wudi’ (their version of ‘Ugly Betty’) or it will be vice versa?

Unilever’s campaign for real beauty has been very popular. True, there are so many kinds of women with so many kinds of beauties. But is beauty all about skin and body? Even the true message of ‘Ugly Betty’ is about true beauty being much deeper than that!!
