Now, the super-rich can flaunt their super-green, super-yachts. News is that a Sydney-based technology company called Solar Sailor is researchig on a solar sail which is expected to function both as a sail and a source of solar power.
Reports say the super-yachts owned by the likes of Roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea Football Club and Paul Allen, co-founder Microsoft, are not close to being eco-friendly thanks to the gallons of fuel they guzzle down. That is just the reason why, Solar Sailor’s idea is being welcomed with open arms. The company’s CEO Robert Dane claims that the new technology will be able to lessen the boats’ fuel consumption considerably, which by the way is estimated to be one liter per second.
Solar Sails are huge wings lined with solar panels that utilise the power of the sun as well as the wind. According to Dane, a saving of 5 per cent will be made in the fuel consumption with the solar sail when the boat is at 18 knots in the water.
