Suzanne Opton is a photographer artist and is the brain behind Soldier Billboard Project, which is evoking a lot of reaction in America. Suzanne has been taking pictures of US soldiers returning from war in Iraq and Afghanistan and has held exhibitions of the same in galleries all over the world.
Is this billboard a tribute to soldiers returning from war? Or is it a personal political statement? Or is she simply trying to ride on popular anti-war sentiments to gain popularity and promote her art? Or is this something else? What is most intriguing is the mood of the soldiers. They are lying on ground motionless yet alive. This again can be interpreted in many ways. Also why such a big advertising campaign just before US Presidential elections?
But certainly Suzanne is not doing this alone. There are people and organizations that are funding this project. These soldiers do deserve an important and rightful place under the sun. All citizens need a reminder that an unknown face is risking it all for them. Maybe these billboards are marking these unknown brave soldiers as lonely humane face defeated by ugliness of war and violence.
But yet motive remains unclear, are they promoting art? Or is it an anti-war campaign? Blurring fine lines, not making explicit statements is another clever trend.
