South Korea has blamed its neighbor and long time enemy, North Korea of trying to buy time to get its hands on nuclear weapons by engaging the United States of America into a dialog aimed towards peace between the two countries. The statement was given by South Korea’s foreign minister, Yu Myung-Hwan and the timing of these stern words is also quite interesting, as US diplomats are scheduled to visit Pyongyang in an effort to persuade the communist regime to resume the six party disarmament negotiations.
It would interesting to note, that North Korea had recently revalued its national currency to battle the increasing inflation that has brought the economy of North Korea almost to its knees. Furthermore, Mr. Hawn has expressed his doubts in regards to the disarmament talks and he believes that, bilateral talks between the U.S and Pyongyang to make it abandon its nuclear program would prove to be futile.
In a statement, Yu Myung-Hwan said.
“North Korea’s talk of a peace pact is aimed at buying time and continuing developing nuclear weapons so that it may be recognised as a nuclear state. But any peace treaty must come through discussions involving the four parties concerned, South Korea, North Korea, the United States and China.”
North and South Korea have been at loggerheads against each other since the division of the peninsula after the Korean War, where the United Nations led coalition force fought side by side with South Korea and the communist North Korea was wholly supported by China. The six party talks aimed at ending the nuclear threat posed by North Korea, include the U.S , Russia, China, Japan, South Korea and North Korea.
