Where there is a will, there is a way. The inhabitants of the Spanish town Santa Coloma de Gramenet, near Barcelona seem to be hardcore followers of this maxim. When they wished to fight against global warming, the scarcity of flat, open and sun-drenched land in the town didn’t stop them from turning towards the sun to power their homes. Instead, they set up solar panels on the top of mausoleums at the cemetery which happened to be the only viable spot they could find.

According to a city council member Antoni Fogue, this three year old project had faced denial from the people in its early stages. But, a public awareness campaign has motivated the community to accept this step towards clean power. The graveyard now mounts about 462 solar panels erected at low angle and facing south so that they can trap maximum amount of sunlight to power 60 homes without bothering the people visiting it.

Esteve Serret, director of Conste-Live Energy, the company that runs the cemetery offers this project as a tribute to the ancestors and why shouldn’t it be? After all, it is giving their heirs green and clean renewable energy!
