
In what could be described as a brazen attack on athletes, the Sri Lankan Cricket team came under fire in Lahore this morning when suspected Islamic Terrorists opened fire on the bus they were traveling. The entire cricketing community has been shocked by this gruesome attack in which many players are believed to be injured. The bus was ambushed by gunmen who started opening fire on the bus indiscriminately.
Kumar Sangakkara, the vice captain revealed that they were all safe except for the policemen who were killed. Many players have suffered injuries. Chaminda Vaas, Ajantha Mendis, Mahela Jayawardene, Thilan Samaraweera, Kumar Sangakkara, Tharanga Paranavitana and Suranga Lakmal have been injured by the gunshots and the city of Lahore is under the grip of a terror attack.
Lahore residents have expressed shock and anguish at the attack and also have expressed dismay over this senseless attack on foreign sportsmen. The Sri Lankan team is expected to be back in Sri Lanka as soon as possible. The attack is a grim reminder of the killings of Israeli athletes during the Olympics in Germany many decades ago.
The attack took place at the Liberty turnaround, an upmarket area of Lahore. The attacks were similar to those conducted in Bombay where young men between the ages of 20 and 25 fired indiscriminately. However, this time the attackers have escaped and many policemen were shot dead. We shall keep you updated about what is going in Lahore in the hours to come by.
