The tragic death of the temporary Wal-Mart employee has opened a Pandora’s Box to what lies amidst crowded workplaces. Wal-Mart could have easily avoided Jdimytai Damour’s death which was caused when eager customers barged in when he opened the doors. The United Food and commercial Workers Union criticized Wal-Mart without mercy and said that if only the company had taken some responsibility to control the crowds, to set up barricades and to channelize the moving people to a certain discipline.
Even the employees did not have proper training which Wal-Mart was obliged to provide. The company sounded apologetic and regretful but that isn’t enough to bring back a dead person from the grave. The incident took place on the ‘Black Friday’ the day after thanksgiving which also is traditionally the biggest shopping day in the US.
The UFCW has been particularly critical about Wal-mart’s approaches towards its employees and safety standards. This incident may damage the company’s already flagging brand image and loyalty. Most see the company as a hegemonic establishment that refuses to accept responsibilities for its employee’s safety.
