Study: Surfing Internet During Work Increases Productivity

Getting caught by your boss checking out your Facebook account while you are supposed to be working on your latest project couldn’t possibly be a very great thing, it might even cost you your job. Then again, perhaps you have a damn cool boss who understands you need a break.

An Australian study recently revealed that surfing the internet for entertainment while at work relaxes employees and, thus, increased their productivity. The study done by Brent Coker from the University of Melbourne showed that productivity increased by a stunning 9% if the employees had ‘workplace internet leisure browsing’ (WLB). According to Coker, leisure browsing helps increase concentration due to the tuning out effect of the browsing time. However, the breaks must be short and quick; this does not mean that the employee can surf all day at work.

This study could lead to great changes in the workplace. Now employees can demand time off every now and then to get their minds back on track. Getting caught watching porn while at work, though, may still lead to an immediate discharge.
