Sun will dismiss 3 thousand employees

Over the next 12 months, Sun Microsystems intends to cut 3 thousand employees, according to a document issued by the company to regulatory agencies of the United States on the last Tuesday. According to the company, this was the way found to reverse the damages caused on account of delay in the company’s acquisition by Oracle, which awaits the approval of the Commission.

Last month, Oracle CEO, Larry Ellison, estimated that the Sun was losing about $ 100 million per month pending the approval of the purchase agreement.

Sun expects to have an expense of 75 million to $ 125 million with layoffs expected to take place mainly in the last three months of 2009 and first quarter of next year. In addition to cuts announced this week, Sun had previously announced plans to cut something like 5 to 6 thousand jobs in order to improve its financial health. However, the company declined to comment on the relationship between the two ads.

The Sun is one of the largest software manufacturers in the world. Its most famous products are Java and StarOffice, and databases (MySQL), VirtualBox and its own operating system.
