SunCats: Rechargeable Solar Batteries By Knut Karlsen

Those who spent many a childhood day arranging batteries in the sun thinking that this would replenish their energy would be pleased to know that in fact this may be possible. Well, with a few alterations, of course.

Designer-inventor Knut Karlsen has come up with an extremely simple way to recharge batteries using the abundant rays of the sun. Titled SunCats, Knut wraps NiMH rechargeable batteries in 1.8V flexible photovoltaic panels and further connects them with a conductive silver pen and flat wires. Leaving these in the sun would recharge them, and without hurting the environment. Knut’s method makes the batteries more eco-friendly than traditional rechargeable batteries since these combine the solar cells present within the batteries.

Knut was inspired by scientists he met while pursuing his diploma at IFE. He claims the design isn’t yet perfect and intends to spend a little more time making them ideal for use. Knut hopes to include capacitors to make the batteries work more efficiently and also a way of displaying the battery power. We’re waiting, Knut!
