Swine flu cannot be contained

The director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Margaret Chan, said this Thursday, at the opening of an international forum on swine influenza in Mexico, that the spread of H1N1 virus around the world “can not be more contained. ” “From what we see today, with more than 100 countries recording cases of influenza, since a pandemic virus begins, its dispersion must not be contained,” said Chan, at the opening of the forum in the city of Cancun.

Affirming that scientists still have little information on the new flu, Chan, however, said that most cases reported so far have moderate symptoms.

Even so, according to the director of WHO, the organization is monitoring the development of viruses with attention during the winter in the South Hemisphere. In Argentina and Brazil there are cities in state of emergencie because of the swine flu.

Margaret Chan also said that a major challenge for the swine influenza pandemic is to keep the public informed. According to her, some groups such as pregnant women and people with previous medical problems are at more risk of developing this disease.

Chan also reaffirmed the position of WHO that the travel restrictions to affected countries will not prevent the progression of the disease.
