An upcoming book entitled ‘Rock Roadie’ is claimed to be an insider information from one of the former production assistants of legendary rock singer Jimi Hendrix. According to James ‘Tappy’ Wright, one of Hendrix’s roadies, Hendrix’s manager Michael Jeffery, ‘made a drunken confession a year after the star’s death in September 1970’ that he killed the rock star. The motive: an insurance scam. Manager allegedly told assistant that ‘he had taken out a life insurance policy on Hendrix worth $2million (£1.2million) with Jeffery as beneficiary.’

Wright reveals in the book that Jeffery said, “I had to do it, Tappy. You understand, don’t you? I had to do it. You know damn well what I’m talking about.’

It will be recalled that Hendrix died when he was 27 by choking to death on his own vomit. The circumstances surrounding Hendrix’s death has been a mystery all this time, though. Wright offers an explanation when tying up Jeffery to the death scene when he writes that ‘Jeffery said he went to the hotel room and stuffed Hendrix full of pills and wine.’

Officially, Jimi Hendrix died of ‘barbiturate intoxication and inhalation of vomit,’ according to the coroner.

It is understandable that a big star such as Hendrix will send shock waves to his staff should he decide to fire them, and this is probably what happened to his manager Jeffery who was ‘worried that Hendrix was preparing to find a new manager when their deal was due to end in December 1970.’

Wright quotes Jeffery: ‘I was in London the night of Jimi’s death and together with some old friends …we went round to Monika’s hotel room, got a handful of pills and stuffed them into his mouth …then poured a few bottles of red wine deep into his windpipe. I had to do it. Jimi was worth much more to me dead than alive. That son of a bitch was going to leave me. If I lost him, I’d lose everything.’

Very little alcohol was found in Hendrix’s bloodstream.

Parents, school officials, and health care workers in Ohio have been shocked by revelations that abuse of prescription drugs and heroin is slowly replacing alcohol and marijuana abuse among the youth of the US state. The trend has been rising towards more lethal drugs as prescription pill abuse has progressed into synthetic narcotics like OxyContin, and then to more underground and powerful stuff such as heroin which is said to be ‘10 times more powerful than Oxy.’

The Columbus area is noted for the prevalence of heroin which, according to federal drug agents, comes from Mexico.

“We are aware Columbus is high on the ladder of places where heroin is available. I am shocked Columbus is a center for this,” said a school drug counselor. In one of Ohio’s rural counties, ‘a group of local teenagers and young men had been dealing heroin. They had been bringing the drug from Dayton, about 70 miles west from here.’

Heroin street peddlers in Ohio are found to be local kids who are educated and not dropouts. Most are also not drug users. These fresh-faced kids source the drug from drug traffickers that have accessed their way into the region, making the drug widely available. In Ohio, the street value of heroin is only a bit more expensive than a six-pack of beer.

Many a times, we find it annoying that we would have to drink beer that is not chilled and that which is almost warm as your room is. It is equally annoying when guests come over and you would have to chill the beer first before serving them with the world’s favorite drink.

Luis Luna has designed the Beer Crate which is a stylish and ergonomic design to not only store beer but also chill it. The crate holds several beer bottles and comes with a beer holder that can contain water.

Once it is filled with water, you could place it in the freezer. Once the holder is frozen, you could put it back into the aluminum base and you would get all the cold beer that you ever wished for. I don’t understand why the Heineken logo is there on top of it though. Could this be a Heineken PR exercise?

Getting drunk is one of the most fun vices that a person can think of. So, when you’re told to give up your alcoholic status, the thought of being away from your beloved drink can kill all joy, but perhaps you can satisfy others’ wishes as well as your own.

Enter the Alcoholic Architecture that will leave you with a silly smile on your face and walking in eights. The bar gives you the illusion of being inside a strong drink and will leave you feeling intoxicated without a single sip. With one ticket, you can spend 40 minutes inside the bar walking through a cocktail atmosphere, sniffing on the tonic mist and walking around the giant straws while listening to the pleasant sound of a drink being poured into a glass with chunks of ice.

Designed by Bompas & Parr, the Alcoholic Architecture is the extreme drunkard’s illusion and would be open to all those proclaiming gone-beyond-cure status in London till the 25th of this month.

Beer lovers have more reason to celebrate. Jacobsen Brew House has just launched the second edition of its Vintage trilogy and the Vintage No. 2 is being touted as one of the world’s most expensive beers.

Morten Ibsen, one of the five creators of Vintage No.2 claims that the Vintage trilogy intends to challenge luxury wines with what they have to offer. With only 600 bottles in production, each costing over 250 euro, the luxury beer may indeed take over from the select wines being sipped at posh locations the world over. According to Jacobsen, vintage No.2 is a Baltic Porter taking after the Imperial Stout originally made for the Russian Tsarina Katherine the Great in the 18thC. With an expiry date of 2059, the beer is ebony black in colour with a fragrance similar to tar and ropes.

Vintage No.2 is supposed to go well with sea food as well as chocolate and crème crème brûlée. Each bottle of Vintage No.2 has a hand stencilled print by Marco Evaristti. Do you have what it takes to become a ‘citizen of the pink state’?

The one thing that can unite men from any profession and past is beer, well, perhaps next to football and women. Forget about men, beer has the intoxicating pull to unite women as well.

Not enough can be said about this lovely beverage and apart from the fact that it can turn you into a friendly giddy kid, beer-lovers also claim it is great for the skin. So it is no wonder that the Beer Soap Co. brings you a soap made out of beer. If you’ve had way too many drinks today and that doesn’t make sense then let me assure you that this product truly does exist. You have a wide range to choose from: there’s Tobacco Orange Beer Soap, Phoenix Beer Soap, Outback Lager Beer Soap, and loads more.

According to the company, the $5 Beer Soaps are made with the beer the soap is named after plus some other ingredients so it can pass off as a bar of soap. Now if you go home reeking of beer you can always tell the Missus you were at the gym and just had a shower.

Warning: Not for consumption! Beer Soap intoxication may be hazardous!

It has been found that consumption of alcohol in women may raise the risk of cancer. A study suggested that a large glass of wine everyday increases the rise of breast cancer, rectal or liver cancer and throat cancer in women by a quarter.

A glass of wine has around three units of alcohol. A single unit of alcohol is equivalent to one pint of beer. A woman consuming one unit of alcohol everyday has 12 per cent chances of developing one of the cancers mentioned earlier. Drinking a glass of wine or three units of alcohol raised the chances by 15-25 per cent of a woman developing cancer.

Depending of the consumption level of the alcohol, the women are at risk and are found to vary by cancer. Each extra unit of alcohol consumption increased the chances of developing breast cancer by 12 per cent, rectal cancer by 10 per cent, liver cancer by 24 per cent, throat cancer by 25 per cent.

All the wine lovers, and the ladies who consumes alcohol more than safe level, need to be more watchful to reduce heath risks.

According to a recent Million Women Study conducted by researchers of University of Oxford daily intake of even a small amount of alcohol can increase risks of cancer among women.

The study was conducted over a million women, making it a largest study ever. Apart from smoking and diet related factors such as obesity even regular intake of little alcohol has become a risk factor. So lifestyle change can truly be held accountable for increased cases of cancer. In UK alone there are some 7,000 cases of cancer every year.

There is a very little reason to negate this study. It was conducted over a period of seven years over largest group ever to identify risk factors of cancer among women. Though the risk of cancer among alcohol consumers is minimal 5% but it is nevertheless a factor. Moreover there are no markers either, so even minimal regular consumption could increase risk of breast, liver and rectal cancer. Hope similar studies are being conducted for men.

This may not come as good news for women who like to raise a toast every evening with or without reason.

Canadian Club is famous for all the great whiskey’s they bring out, time to time. This time around, they have launched an exclusive 30-year reserve whiskey, which I am sure will take you to new heights. There is something about aged whiskeys, and they do taste better than aged wine. I am sorry but I am a little partial towards whiskey.

This is also the oldest Canadian Club whiskey available in the market. The whiskey comes bottled in a gold etched and wax-sealed bottle, aesthetically packaged in a satin-lined box. The box is all about exclusivity, right from the time if opening the box to taking a swig.

The whiskey has a tinge of smooth oak and dried fruits with a dash of spice. However, the spices and dried fruits are so subtle, you would just love it. the bottle costs $200 and is a great buy if you are a whiskey connoisseur. There is nothing better than a solo night of great whiskey, great music and a game at the pool table. In fact, I wouldn’t mind doing it often.

Thanks Mimi

Contrary to what we might think, insomnia is far more destructive than just the irritation that people who have sleepless nights feel. A new scientific research has found that the indirect costs of untreated insomnia are far more than the costs of its requisite medications. The indirect costs outweigh the direct costs of treatment. In Quebec, Canada, for example, the total annual cost of insomnia is 6.5 billion Canadian dollars, or one percent of the province’s $228.5 billion GDP. That may be something to lose sleep over.

Insomnia has its socioeconomic cost. The cost of alcohol used as sleep inducer is more than doctor’s fees and price of sleep aiding medicines. For indirect costs of insomnia, lost hours of productivity at work comes as the steepest price. Job absenteeism comes as the second most costly effect. The research study is significant because it validates the notion that there is more to insomnia than doctor consultations and medications. The study concludes that public education and awareness on the availability of effective insomnia treatments are the vital factors that can curb this health affliction and socioeconomic condition.

Insomnia is the difficulty in initiating or maintaining sleep. In 2007, around 64 million insomniacs were recorded in the US alone. Insomnia occurs slightly more commonly in women than in men. In most cases, insomnia is a result of another disease, a side effect of medicines, or a symptom of a psychological problem.
