The campaign entitled “You can lose more than your patience” is a strong message about the devastation experienced by abused children. The visual of broken porcelain children says it all: children are as fragile as porcelain, and if they ‘break’ and ‘shatter’ under the cruelty of child abuse, their childhood and even their whole life are lost – more than their abusive parents’ anger and temper.

Domestic violence is a pervading social malaise in the world today, with children as the most helpless victims. The lives of abused children end up shattered and irreparable even when they reach adulthood, if indeed they reach that far. One of the most immediate solutions is anger management therapy for abusive parents, but even that may just be band-aid solution because, more often than not, abusive parents had been abused children themselves. Such is the vicious cycle of abuse.

Advertising agency DDB Poland with Creative Director Filip Berendt, Art Director Maciej Waligora, and Photographer Jullia Fullerton-Batten came up with this recent print campaign for the Nobody’s Children Foundation, a charity organization in Poland that provides assistance to abused children, their parents, and guardians.

When life’s irritations and frustrations build up, one can feel stressed or even experience some amount of anger. These can manifest immediately through one’s mood. The quality of mood is the ‘prevailing emotional tone or general attitude’ that can almost always dictate one’s day, and how he or she will relate to the activities of the day.

One always has the choice to change bad mood into a positive one. There are various ways to alter bad mood. One of these is through physical activity. Exercising to beat the blues has been quite effective for many people.

According to Elizabeth Scott, M.S., in her article ‘Exercise and Stress Relief: Using Exercise as a Stress Management Tool,’ exercise can be an extremely effective stress reliever for several reasons: it is an outlet for frustrations, a means to decrease ‘stress hormones’ like cortisol, a way to increase endorphins (your body’s ‘feel-good’ chemicals that give your mood a natural boost), and a tactic of distraction.

More high-energy forms of exercise like boxing, martial arts or weight training can also provide an effective release of these negative emotions, turning these otherwise potentially unhealthy emotions into motivation for increased health and well-being. You will notice that a person who sulks is, more often than not, one who is physically stagnant.

High regard for one’s self, at the expense of recognizing the equal worth of others, is the most operational definition of pride. It is the deadliest of all deadly sins. It causes one to love his or her own excellence, without realizing that others can be excellent, too. Pride is the bedrock of all discrimination on earth.

Pride goes beyond the basic human right of equality. It also causes disputes and wars since the fundamental principle of pride is total elimination of the achievement of others. The opposite of pride is humility. It is humility that brings about peace and order, along with generosity. Because of pride, simple constructive competition leads to cutthroat competition.

Pride makes one haughty, thinking that oneself is at an advantaged position. This high opinion of oneself leads to vanity or vainglory. This inordinate self-love causes the other deadly sins. When one is negatively proud, he is intolerant of what he perceives are the shortcomings of the world, and are thus beneath his station. Because others are inferior, his temper is short with their shortcomings.

This leads to anger, another deadly sin. A proud man has a short fuse when it comes to other people’s faults and shortcomings. Because people who err do not measure up to his standards, which in his mind are lofty because of his high regard of himself, he cannot tolerate others and will, thus, be prone to impatience and anger.

High regard for oneself makes the person think that he no longer has to lift a finger to prove his worth some more. This causes inertia and dormancy in a person. In his mind, he is already great. Thus, pride leads to sloth, another deadly sin. In his mind, a proud man is a successful man, and already self-made. He already rests comfortably on his laurels.

Whether he is just deluding himself or his achievements are truly concrete and measurable is not the point. A man afflicted with pride is more than content with what he has done so far. This contentment and level of satisfaction makes him lazy so as to achieve more. In his mind, he need not add any more feathers to his cap.
